Building Your Summer Wardrobe Ep.2; Your Strategy

Hi Dollsss! Welcome back to 'Building Your Summer Wardrobe' mini-series - Episode 2 - your shopping strategy!

This episode is all about strategising and planning. Now that we've cleared our wardrobe from the detox in episode 1, it's time to think about what to add to your wardrobe and how to go about doing so. Before getting stuck into the excitement of prepping for our shopping spree, there are a few things that I think are very important for you to think about;

1. SHOPPING TO SUIT YOUR REAL LIFE
I'm personally guilty of buying a lot of 'going out' outfits - even though I never have anywhere to go. My real life consists of work, home, church and the occasional event/party etc. but an average week in my life is work, home and church. Therefore there's really been no point in me filling up my wardrobe with so many fancy outfits when I have nowhere to wear them to - and then I struggle to find outfits for what I really do do [lol, do-do] - because most things in my wardrobe are #OTT.

So what activities does your week consist of and what activities do you expect to be doing this summer? Do you have enough outfit options for all aspects of your life? You do not want to be stuck with a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear.

2. SPEND MORE ON QUALITY
For obvious reasons, t's always a good idea to shop for quality rather than quantity. More times than not, quality pieces look better and perform better. They will almost always cost more, but you get what you pay for. Spend that little bit more on good quality pieces that won't let you down - you won't regret it.

You don't have to complete your whole summer wardrobe with quality things in one shopping trip. If you can only find three or four quality pieces with your whole budget for one shopping trip then you're #winning. You can always keep adding to your wardrobe wherever possible and within reason.

Also remember that not every item needs to be quality and not every expensive item is quality.
How to tell if something is quality;
1. Durability - is the material durable/long-lasting, what will happen to it after a few washes?
2. Sturdiness - is the material fit for purpose?
3. Shape & wear/fit - will the item keep its shape after being worn a few times?
4. Details - the tailoring and stitching etc.

3. THE TRENDS
Don't get caught up in the summer trends too much; not everything is for everyone and remember to always take into consideration your body type and invest in clothing that will flatter YOU the most.

Also be sure to invest in versatile clothing - pieces that can be used again and again to recreate different outfits and looks with.

PREP TO SHOP

Now for the fun bit before the really fun bit - plan for your shopping trip. If you think it'll help, make a shopping list like one that you would make for grocery shopping. Take a look after your wardrobe detox and take note of the following to help you with what to include on your list;

the clothes
1. What pieces are now missing from your wardrobe?
2. What pieces do you need?
3. What pieces do you want?
4. What pieces do you have enough of? - i.e. pieces that DO NOT need to be included in your list.
5. What pieces don't you have enough of?
6. Which aspects of your life lack enough outfit options?

the shops
1. What are your favourite stores to shop in?
2. Which of those stores are good for certain pieces - e.g. I always go to Topshop for my jeans because they make good a$$ jeans, and I like H&M or ZARA for dresses and casual wear.
3. What store will you start with, what store will you finish with?
4. Are there any other stores you will consider if you can't find anything in your favourite stores?

your colour scheme
If you are planning on having a colour scheme, it's a great way to ensure your summer wardrobe is well put together. Here are some things for you to consider when putting together your own colour palette;
1. What are your favourite colours?
2. What colours do you feel reflect your personality the best?
3. What colours do you already have in your wardrobe? - Do they go together?
4. What colours do you have enough of, what colours don't you have enough of?
5. What colours compliment your skin tone?
6. Do you want to incorporate some patterned pieces?

your style inspirations
We all have our favourite celebs or style bloggers that we are always in awe of when it comes to their fashion and styling, and it's not a bad idea to take inspiration from what we see them wearing in our magazines and on our instagram feeds. However, its important to remember to always tailor it back to yourselves. You saw Rihanna in that amazing dress and you love how it looks - but do you have a similar body type to Rihanna? Does that outfit even resonate with your own personal style or do you just really like how it looks on Rihanna? Always, always consider how something would look on you before dedicating your time to hunting it down.

You can also consider recreating the looks that you see on your style inspirations, with similar pieces that you have in your wardrobe - by all means, take inspiration, but also make it your own!
